Frequently asked questions

What is employer matching?
Employer matching is when your company contributes money to your 401k based on how much you contribute. A common match is 100% of your contribution up to 3% of your salary. Always contribute at least enough to get the full match — it is essentially free money and an instant 100% return.
What is the 401k contribution limit for 2026?
For 2026, you can contribute up to $23,500 to your 401k. If you are 50 or older, you can make additional catch-up contributions of $7,500 for a total of $31,000. Employer contributions do not count toward this limit.
What return rate should I use?
A diversified stock portfolio has historically returned about 7% annually after inflation. Use 6-8% for a reasonable estimate. More conservative portfolios with bonds may return 4-5%.
