Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?
A common rule of thumb is the 4% rule: you need 25 times your annual retirement expenses saved. If you want $60,000 per year in retirement, aim for $1,500,000 in savings. This allows you to withdraw 4% annually with a high probability the money will last 30 years.
What return rate should I use?
The S&P 500 has historically returned about 10% annually before inflation, or about 7% after inflation. Using 6-7% is a reasonable conservative estimate for a diversified stock portfolio over the long term.
What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your retirement savings each year without running out of money over a 30-year retirement. It comes from the Trinity Study, a landmark analysis of historical portfolio performance.
