Frequently asked questions

What is the break-even age and why does it matter?
The break-even age is the point at which the total value of your monthly pension payments surpasses what you would have accumulated by investing the lump sum. If you live past the break-even age, the pension wins on pure numbers. If you die before it, the lump sum would have been worth more. It is one of the most important numbers in this decision.
What happens to my pension when I die?
This depends on your pension election. A single-life annuity pays the most per month but stops when you die, leaving nothing for your spouse. A joint-and-survivor annuity pays less per month but continues (often at 50โ€“100%) for your spouse after you pass. If you take the lump sum, whatever remains can be passed to your heirs. This is a major factor in the decision if you have a spouse or dependents.
Is the lump sum or monthly pension taxed differently?
Both are generally taxable as ordinary income. With the lump sum, you can roll it directly into an IRA to defer taxes โ€” you only pay taxes when you withdraw. Monthly pension payments are taxed as income each year. If you take the lump sum as cash rather than rolling it over, you will owe income tax on the full amount in that tax year, which can push you into a higher bracket.
What if my company goes bankrupt?
Private sector pension plans are insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) up to certain limits (around $7,000/month in 2026). If your pension exceeds that or your employer is in financial trouble, taking the lump sum removes that risk entirely. Government pensions (federal, state, military) are generally much more secure.
Should I roll the lump sum into an IRA?
In almost all cases, yes โ€” if you take the lump sum, roll it directly into a Traditional IRA within 60 days to avoid a large tax bill and potential 10% early withdrawal penalty. A direct trustee-to-trustee rollover is the cleanest method and avoids the mandatory 20% withholding on indirect rollovers.
Does this calculator account for Social Security?
The calculator factors in your other income sources as part of the risk assessment. Social Security provides inflation-adjusted guaranteed income for life, which reduces your reliance on the pension for basic expenses. If you have strong Social Security income, the flexibility of a lump sum becomes more attractive.
