How much should I tip at a restaurant?

The standard tip in the US is 15-20% for sit-down restaurants. 18% is considered standard for good service, 20% for great service, and 25%+ for exceptional service. For poor service, 10% is acceptable.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
