Frequently asked questions

What is the standard repayment plan?
The standard federal student loan repayment plan sets a fixed monthly payment over 10 years. It results in the least total interest paid but has the highest monthly payment. It is the default plan for most federal loan borrowers.
What is income-based repayment?
Income-Based Repayment (IBR) caps your monthly payment at 10-15% of your discretionary income. Remaining balances may be forgiven after 20-25 years. This plan is best for borrowers with high loan balances relative to their income.
Should I pay off student loans early?
If your student loan interest rate is low (under 5%), investing extra money may earn more than the interest you save by paying early. If your rate is high (over 6%), paying off faster usually wins. Use this calculator to compare both scenarios.
